Instincte umane Giveaway

I've done tons of giveaways on LibraryThing and BookLikes so far, but only for English ebooks. So it was just about time I did a giveaway for a Romanian book.

You can enter on Goodreads, and if you're lucky, you'll win a signed paperback copy of "Instincte umane", a post-apocalyptic novella published by Millennium Books in 2013.

The giveaway ends on October 31, and it's open only to Romanian residents.

By the way, it's my last extra copy of "Instincte umane" so you'll be really lucky to have it.

Indie Pride Day

The lighting was wrong, the photographer was in a hurry, and it's really hard to edit photos with a bright window right in front of you so the colors are a little off, but ... here are my books! :)

Human Instincts Book Trailer

I'm still not crazy about book trailers, but this one was easy to make so here you go.

Human Instincts New Cover

Human Instincts English edition ebook cover got a makeover.

The original was two years old and looked very amateurish. Back then, it was my first self-published title, and I still had a lot to learn. The new cover looks... less so. Hopefully! :P I kept the image and the colors, but fiddled with the fonts a little. I'm happy with it at this point.

Human Instincts is available on Amazon.comKobo, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and Smashwords.

And don't forget about the Romanian edition available here.

Mention in Observator cultural

While doing a recap of what happened this year in the Romanian sci fi and fantasy literary world, Catalin Badea-Gheracostea mentions me in his "Observator cultural" column as "the unofficial best debut of the year", mostly thanks to Human Instincts. Well, that's as good as an official title, I guess. Read for yourself here.

The Romanian of Human Instincts edition is available here.

The English of Human Instincts edition is available here (and several other places listed in the right sidebar).

Update: I nearly missed there was a new issue of Helion Online out. In 2014, Catalin Badea-Gheracostea mentions the idea of a bilingual anthology of Romanian hard sci fi and adds my name to a list of important writers. I suddenly feel so popular. :)

Instincte umane Review

In the October issue of Argos Magazine, Tudor Ciocarlie reviews the Romanian edition of Human Instincts.

Aside from the fact that he liked it, which I already knew because he also read the English edition, he says towards the end that he'd like to read a sci fi novel written by your truly.

Weeell... it just happens that this is next on my to do list. The world I'm thinking of is too rich to cram it inside a novella so I might just end up with a short novel instead.

Yes, I know I'm postponing once again finishing The Stolen Wings trilogy, but I've been writing fantasy for the past year, and I long for writing some sci fi for a change.

About Bookfest in "Observator cultural"

In his latest column in "Observator cultural", Catalin Badea-Gheracostea talks about the new Romanian books available at Bookfest this weekend in Bucharest.

After all the praises he gave "Efectul de nautil" and "Instincte umane", and considering that we have never met face to face, I feel like I owe him a couple of drinks!

"Instincte umane" at Bookfest 2013

Bookfest (international book fair) is taking place this weekend in Bucharest.

Two events are particularly important as far as I'm concerned:

"Instincte umane"Millenniun Books launch - Saturday, June 1st, at 16:30, at Art/Paladin stand.

"Calatorii in timp" - Nemira launch - Sunday, June 2nd, at 14:30.

I won't be there, but that doesn't mean you can't go and buy some books. Aside from those mentioned above, I also recommend you the following (all from Millennium Books):

"Efectul de nautil" by Ioana Visan

"Zombii: Cartea mortilor vii" edited by Mircea Pricajan

"Cele 1001 de scorneli ale Mosului SF" edited by Stefan Ghidoveanu

"Steampunk: A doua revolutie" edited by Adrian Craciun

"Dansand pe Marte si alte povestiri fantastice" edited by Michael Haulica

Update: Here's a video from the book launch courtesy of Assassin CG.

About "Instincte umane"

It's been almost a year since Human Instincts has been released on Amazon. About the process of writing Human Instincts I wrote here.

Now here we are a year older and, hopefully, wiser. Like I've already announced, the Romanian edition, "Instincte umane", was picked up by Millennium Books to be published, with a launch at Bookfest book fair at the end of May.

So now I'm going to tell you how this particular project came to life. Shortly after my Romanian short story collection "Efectul de nautil" was released, I got a phone call from Horia Ursu from Millennium Books. He began by saying something like "How about making another book?"

At first, I was stunned. I had no idea what he was talking about. I was working on something, but I had nothing ready to be published. I answered with a tentative "Okaaay... What book?"

"Human Instincts!"

Ah. OK, now it made sense. Kind of. Unfortunately, it led to one of the most moronic conversation I have ever had, with my answers consisting mostly in "Yes... okay... sure... of course... if you want to..." It ended with me promising to send him the final Romanian draft correlated with the English version. When I put the phone down and replayed the conversation in my head, I was convinced he was going to call again in the morning and tell me he changed his mind. I mean as a writer people expect you to be more articulate, and I had been nothing of that sort.

Lucky for me, Horia is wiser than that, and the next contact we had was him sending me the cover art for approval. This time I had no objections. I liked it from the start, even if it's so different from the one I used for the English edition. And there it was, we had another book.

It just proves that no matter what you do, you have to write the stories for yourself. Someday, someone is going to like them. It took three years to see this baby going to print, but it's been three happy years with little disappointment on the way. I wish you all the same thing!

The actual book looks like in the photos below (Photos (c) Horia Nicola Ursu), and it can be ordered here or purchased at Bookfest in Bucharest, between May 29 and June 2nd.
