There comes a time...

When you've been spending several years in a roleplaying group, you reach a point when it feels like all the roads have been taken and you slowly start to drift away. Then a member you've written tons over the years with asks you to pick up an old thread and finish it, and for an afternoon you fall back in the old stride and write fully enjoying the experience. You're happy and you have a laugh, but once the excitement begins to fade you realise it doesn't feel the same as it used to do. Time has passed and people's interests have changed, yours have too only that in a different direction so you don't feel at home anymore and you secretly wish for the old times to return. But that's of course impossible, and you're stuck with that wish and a bunch of characters you don't have the heart to put down and let the dust settle over them. Still you try and struggle to find a new purpose, another approach, another angle...

So I go back to my story, the premise looked good in theory but for some reason the words don't quite sit well on the page, and I know that if I threw in one of my old characters the story would instantly become cleaver, witty and fun, and it would work just great. But I don't, because that time has passed and, although it's hard to let go of the past, it's time to move on and find new adventures and new joys.
